Here are some useful steps to help you in case an emergency should happen:
| Toothaches |
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out. Use dental floss to remove any food impaction that might be trapped between teeth. Do not place aspirin on gum tissue because it will burn your tissue. See your dentist as soon as possible. |
| Knocked out Permanent Tooth |
If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently in running water. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. Gently insert and hold it in it's socket. If this is not possible, please the tooth in a cup of milk, or when a cup of milk is not available, in a cup of cool water. Go immediately to your dentist (within 30 minutes if possible). Do not forget to bring the tooth! (Do not insert a baby tooth back in the mouth.) |
| Broken Tooth |
Gently clean dirt from the injured area with warm water. Place cold compresses on the face, in the area of the injured tooth, to decrease swelling. Go to the dentist immediately. |
| Bitten Tongue or Lip |
Apply direct pressure to the bleeding area with a clean cloth. If swelling is present, apply cold compresses. If bleeding does not stop, go to the hospital emergency room. |
| Objects caught between the Teeth |
Try to remove object with floss. Guide the floss carefully to avoid cutting gums. If you are not successful in removing the object, go to the dentist. Do not remove the object with a sharp or pointed instrument. |
| Possible Broken Jaw |
Do not move the jaw. Secure the jaw in place by trying a handkerchief, necktie, or towel around the jaw over the top of your head. If swelling is present, apply cold compresses. Go immediately to a hospital emergency room, or call your dentist. |
