What Is a Fixed Dental Bridge?

A fixed dental bridge literally bridges the space left by a missing tooth. It consists of a replacement tooth (called a pontic) held in place by dental crowns on the teeth next to the gap. The bridge is permanently cemented. You don't take it out. It looks, feels, and functions like your natural teeth.

Why a Fixed Bridge May Be Right for You

A fixed bridge does more than fill a gap. It restores your ability to chew and speak clearly. It keeps your nearby teeth from drifting out of position. And it supports your facial structure by maintaining the natural shape of your mouth. Unlike a removable partial denture, a bridge stays put and feels like your own teeth. While it doesn't preserve jawbone like an implant can, it is a less invasive option that still protects your smile from the effects of tooth loss. Dr. Danielle Bitton will talk through your goals and help you decide if a bridge is the best fit.

For patients who want a fixed solution without surgery, a bridge is a time-tested option. However, if you are primarily concerned with bone preservation and long-term durability, a dental implant may be a better investment. We offer both options and can help you weigh the tradeoffs. What to Expect: Your Bridge Appointment at Our Scottsdale Office

Getting a bridge takes two visits. First, Dr. Bitton gently prepares the teeth on either side of the gap by removing a thin layer of enamel. She uses an iTero digital scanner to take a precise impression, with no goopy or uncomfortable materials. You wear a temporary bridge while the permanent one is made in a dental lab. On your second visit, we remove the temporary and cement your custom bridge. The whole process is comfortable, and we will walk you through every step.

Common Questions About Dental Bridges in Scottsdale

What happens if I leave a missing tooth untreated?

Your remaining teeth can shift into the gap, causing bite misalignment, increased risk of decay on those shifted teeth, and gradual bone loss in the jaw. Over time, these changes make future tooth replacement more complex and can lead to losing additional teeth. Treating a missing tooth early helps protect your whole mouth.
